Connecting a Next Century TR4 Transceiver to a Grid Gear Electric Meter

Overview

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for wiring a Next Century TR4 Transceiver to a Grid Gear Electric MeterFollowing these steps ensures accurate pulse recording and reliable wireless transmission of electrical data to the Next Century Cloud

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open the Grid Gear Meter

Locate the Grid Gear meter and identify the release tabs on the right side of the enclosure. Apply firm pressure to these tabs to open the meter and expose the internal components.

Step 2: Identify the Pulse Connection Wire

Inside the meter, locate the gray wire equipped with a red connector at the end. This is the pulse output wire that transmits consumption data to the transceiver.

Step 3: Connect to the TR4i Transceiver

  1. Open the Next Century TR4i transceiver by applying pressure to the tab on the side.

  2. Locate the connection slot (the blue terminal block or pins) next to the blue battery.

  3. Insert the red connection wire into the designated terminal slot.

    • Note: If using a blue terminal block, insert the wires into the ports marked IN and GND

Step 4: Verify Proper Seating

It is critical that the pulse wire is fully seated to ensure a secure electrical connection.

  • Correct: The red connector is pushed down until it is flush with the board or firmly gripped by the terminal screws.

  • Incorrect: The connector is loose, tilted, or wires are exposed outside the terminal, which can lead to short circuits or missed pulses.

Step 5: Initiate a Manual Check-In

Once wired, you must force the transceiver to "handshake" with the Gateway to confirm the connection is active.

  1. Locate the Red Reset Button in the upper corner of the transceiver circuit board.

  2. Click and release the button once (do not hold it down).

  3. Confirm Status: The LED will flash Red rapidly while transmitting and then blink Green twice to indicate a successful connection to the Gateway
