Next Century RR4-TR Remote Reader: Resolving the "Tap to Display" Message

The "Tap to Display" message is a normal function of your NextCentury RR4-TR Remote Reader, indicating that the device has entered a low-power sleep mode to maximize battery life. Waking the device up to display the current meter reading is a quick process.

The RR4-TR is designed with a 10-year battery life and conserves power by cycling through its meter views at an interval of 5-10 seconds before entering this sleep state.

Here are the two primary methods to force the device to wake up and display the meter read:

Method 1: Magnet Activation (Recommended)
The easiest way to wake the device is by briefly using a magnet. This process is also used to initiate a wireless connection for technicians.
  1. Locate the Activation Zone: The entire plastic face of the device is the activation zone.
  2. Swipe the Magnet: Swipe a magnet past the Remote Reader's activation zone.
  3.  Confirm Activation: Upon successful activation, a gear icon will temporarily appear on the display, and the reader will then display the current meter read and other configured views. This also initiates a check-in with a programmed Gateway to apply updates.
Method 2: Detaching and Reattaching the Remote Reader
You can also force the device to check in by temporarily detaching it from the mounting plate and then reinstalling it.
  1. Detach the Remote Reader: Locate the security tab at the bottom of the Remote Reader. Pull down the security tab to remove the RR4-TR Remote Reader from its Mounting Plate.

  2. Reinstall the Remote Reader: Re-secure the Remote Reader onto the Mounting Plate.
  3. Confirm Activation: Once re-secured, the device should exit its sleep mode and begin cycling through its programmed display views.
