Tehama Wireless - Guide to Connect the DCAP via Ethernet

The Tehama Wireless DCAP (Data Concentrating Access Point) serves as the central hub in their automated meter reading (AMR) submetering system. It collects data wirelessly from Meter Data Transceivers (MDTs) and repeaters, then transmits it to the cloud for access via Tehama's platform or API. The device supports multiple connectivity options: Ethernet (preferred for stable, wired setups), WiFi, or cellular (on select models).

Connecting via Ethernet is straightforward and recommended when a reliable local network is available, as it provides consistent internet access without relying on wireless signals. Most DCAP models feature a standard 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port and ship with an Ethernet cable.

Materials Needed

  • Tehama Wireless DCAP unit
  • Power adapter (typically 12V DC, included)
  • Ethernet cable (CAT5e or better; one is usually supplied)
  • Access to a router, switch, or network port with internet connectivity (DHCP-enabled preferred)

Step-by-Step Guide to Connect the DCAP via Ethernet

  1. Choose an Installation Location Select a secure, indoor spot for the DCAP near your router or network switch. It should be within wireless range of repeaters or MDTs (Standard Range: up to ~1 mile line-of-sight; MAX Range: up to ~10 miles). Avoid metal surfaces that could interfere with radio performance. Mount the unit using provided brackets if needed for wall or stable surface attachment.

  2. Power Up the DCAP Connect the power supply to the DCAP's power input and plug it into a wall outlet. The Power LED should illuminate (green when powered correctly; some models show red if issues arise). Wait 30–60 seconds for the device to boot. The Status LED may flash initially during self-check.

  3. Connect the Ethernet Cable Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the DCAP's Ethernet port (labeled, often with green/yellow activity lights nearby). Plug the other end into an available port on your router, network switch, or LAN outlet with internet access.

    • The DCAP uses DHCP by default, so it should automatically obtain an IP address from your router - no static IP setup is usually needed unless your network requires it.
    • Check the Ethernet port lights: Green/yellow should light up or blink to confirm a physical link and activity .

  4. Verify Network Connection Allow 1–2 minutes for the DCAP to connect to the internet. Monitor the front Status LED:

    • Steady or slow flashing green typically indicates successful connection and cloud communication.
    • Orange/red or persistent fast flashing may signal an issue (e.g., no DHCP response, cable problem, or internet outage). If lights indicate a problem:
    • Ensure the cable is securely plugged in and the router port is active.
    • Power cycle the DCAP (unplug power for 10 seconds, then reconnect).
    • Confirm your internet is working on other devices.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • No Ethernet lights: Check cable integrity, try a different cable/port, or ensure the router/switch is powered on.
  • Status LED orange/red: Indicates connectivity issues—verify internet, reboot router and DCAP, or check for network changes (e.g., new firewall rules).
